Antenna Mast Mounting Options

There are dozens of ways to secure a mast in the field.  One of our favorites is 2x2x3/16" angle iron and bungee-cords.  A few tight wraps at top and bottom with the cords is amazingly secure  -  we've had 40+ foot masts up in 50mph winds, and nothing budged.  You just have to have enough weight on the base, or a secure weld to a vehicle frame.  If you use U-bolts, be careful not to over-tighten and damage the fiberglass.

My truck mount is welded to the trailer-hitch frame, with a detachable plates and 4-bolts (so it can be removed, but I usually leave it installed).  Really quick setup, if you won't be needing to move the vehicle after the mast is up.

If you build a plate-type mount, I used 1/2" plate steel, with a brace to the angle-iron (42-pounds!!).  In my case, tire weights or lead shot in ammo cans provides the "ballast".  In significant winds, you'll need at least 100 pounds.
